Support and Recovery for Trauma and PTSD
Trauma can happen in so many ways.
You might experience trauma related to one horrible event. A single, horrifying experience is enough to shock the mind and body. Things like car accidents, violence, assault, and abuse leave us with both physical and emotional wounds.
Some people will survive multiple traumas. You might have a job that puts you on the front lines of trauma, such as law enforcement, firefighting, or military service. Over time, these painful memories begin to weigh us down and rob us of our sense of safety.
While some people regain normalcy after trauma, many are left with the stress and shock of what they went through, also known as posttraumatic stress:
- Nightmares
- Flashbacks
- Tension
- Avoidance
- Triggering
- Panic attacks
- Loss of trust
When these symptoms impact one’s ability to work, love, or play, we call it Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Although not every survivor of trauma meets the criteria for PTSD, each can benefit from a chance to heal through psychotherapy.
If you or a loved one are a survivor of trauma looking to get help, look no further. We are here for you.
We are here for you.
West Michigan Psychological Services (WMPS) offers therapy for trauma and PTSD for kids and adults of all ages. Our therapy is trauma-informed and designed to help you recover as quickly and effectively as possible. We offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitivity Reprocessing) therapy and brainspotting techniques to help you work through the pain of the past.
Fred Rogers once said that “Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.”
Much like an improperly healed injury, treatment of trauma often means readdressing the pain and mending things in a healthier way. As this often means thinking about and sharing what happened, we expect that things may feel worse before they get better. You can rely on the expertise and support of your therapist to help you make your healing journey safely and successfully.
Therapy for trauma can help you:
- Process and resolve traumatic memories
- Reduce sensitivity to triggers
- Discover new insights about yourself
- Sleep more effectively and reduce the frequency of nightmares
- Enhance feelings of self-worth
- Find freedom and a new sense of purpose
Sometimes change can be difficult, which is why having a counselor working alongside you is so important. Give yourself the chance to recover, find a new sense of purpose, and live free from the pain of the past.
